Helpful Tips

As you may know, having a heart attack or stroke increases your risk of having either in the future. You also have a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke than the general population if you've experienced heart-related chest pain (unstable angina) or you have peripheral artery disease, or P.A.D. (poor circulation in the legs).

Did You Know?
If you?ve had a recent heart attack, recent stroke, or have been diagnosed with heart-related chest pain, PLAVIX is FDA approved to reduce your risk of a future heart attack or stroke.

In addition to this increased risk, people who have experienced one of these conditions may find that their lives change in other ways. For example, it may take some time to get back to things like driving, physical activity, and going to work after a heart attack. It's also common to experience worry, fear, depression, and anger. Those who have experienced heart-related chest pain (unstable angina) may experience pain during physical exertion or emotional stress.

The physical effects of a stroke may include weakness or paralysis on one side of the body and speech difficulty. A stroke may also cause changes in personality, behavior, feelings, moods, memory, and judgment. And, people with P.A.D. may have to deal with fatigue, cramping, heaviness, pain, or discomfort that occurs during exercise and subsides while at rest.

These changes may also affect peoples' families. When a loved one has a heart attack or stroke, it's common to feel overwhelmed, afraid, or even angry. It is also common to worry about the responsibility of caregiving.

Fortunately, with some effort and the right support, life after a heart attack or stroke may also be the start of positive change. The same may be true of living with P.A.D. or heart-related chest pain (unstable angina).
